A breakdown of how I made a one-take shot where humpback whales breach right next to our small boat in a Norwegian fjord, using Claude inside Blender, an iPhone and Seedance.

<aside> 🐋

The goal: my wife and I are on a small open motorboat in a winter fjord. A whale surfaces far away, then two breach right in front of us, then a giant one explodes out of the water next to the boat and soaks us with icy spray. 15 seconds, one camera, no cuts.

The full pipeline

Idea → Claude builds the Blender blocking → iPhone turns the camera, zoom on the screen
→ character, animal, boat and location references → Seedance 2.5 renders the final shot

Blender was responsible for geography, timing, distances and who is where. The iPhone added the handheld feel. Seedance was responsible for photorealism, the whales, the water and the acting.

1. One trick: something huge passes right next to you

The camera is carried by the boat: it sits at the helm at eye height and moves only with the boat. My phone only turns it. All the action comes from the whales, and every one is closer than the last:

2. An event every two seconds

3. Let Claude build the Blender scene

The blocking was built by Claude through Blender MCP: a fjord, a boat and whales from primitives, with every motion keyed from code so it could be re-run after every note.

Build a 15-second Blender blocking at 24 fps for one continuous shot.

A narrow winter fjord: steep snowy mountain walls on both sides, a dark band
of rock at the waterline, flat dark water. A small open motorboat with a
center console moves forward at about 4 m/s with a gentle swell. A woman
stands at the bow. The camera stands at the helm at eye height.

Humpback whales, real size, about 14 m: one surfaces about 75 m ahead and
lifts its tail; two breach about 15 m ahead-left, a third of a second apart;
one breaches right beside the left side of the boat. The boat rocks on their
waves.

Use only primitives. Whales are black ellipsoids with a flat tail fluke.
Animate whole bodies along paths, not body parts. Give every character its
own color. The camera position comes from the boat, the rotation from my
iPhone. Check that no whale touches the boat on any frame.
